A lot of people still have a few misconceptions about attic ventilation. In general, ventilation is about the circulation of air to keep the room fresh and to reduce moisture levels. It also hinders the growth of microorganisms, such as bacteria and mold, so the occupants can stay healthy and safe while at home. Today, we go over some important facts about this home component.
1. You do not need more attic ventilation than is required. It is important to have an adequate amount of attic ventilation for your home. If the ventilation is insufficient, the attic will develop certain moisture problems during frosty winter months and experience decreased energy efficiency during the summertime. Too much ventilation, on the other hand, can be just as bad since roof vents create additional roof penetration. This means having more spots in the roof where leaks can occur. Talk with a roofing professional to determine what your home requires.
2. There are other ways to increase your home’s energy efficiency than roof vents. Many people are convinced that the purpose of roof vents is to increase energy efficiency during the hot, sultry days of summer. However, the energy efficiency of your home is more dependent on the color of your shingles, sun exposure and insulation than roof vents.
Meanwhile, homes in colder climates will greatly benefit from attic ventilation. You will need rigid insulation in order to prevent condensation on your roof sheathing. In warmer climates, you can eliminate hot attic spaces by installing a thermal barrier along the roofline.
3. Poor ventilation contributes to ice damming. A poorly ventilated attic traps the heat and sets up the conditions for ice damming. An ice dam is a ridge of ice that commonly forms on the eaves of sloped roofs. The water that backs up behind the dam can leak into a home, causing damage to walls, ceilings and other areas. This can also cause the separation between the decking and fascia boards, and penetrate the underlayment and eventually the attic.
